Solana is preparing for transaction confirmations that are 85 times faster
Imagine sending crypto-assets and having the transaction become final in less than a second. That is exactly what Solana is preparing to achieve with one of the biggest technological upgrades in the network's history.
On 21 October 2026, Solana plans to activate Alpenglow, a new mechanism that could reduce transaction finality time from approximately 12.8 seconds to just 150 milliseconds.
That means approximately 85 times faster finality compared with the current mechanism.
What exactly will change?
When you send crypto-assets, the transaction is first processed by the network. It then needs to reach finality, meaning it can no longer be reversed under normal blockchain operating conditions.
Solana aims to accelerate precisely this process.
With Alpenglow, the network will use a new mechanism for reaching consensus among validators, called Votor. The goal is to reduce transaction finality to a fraction of a second, compared with the current approximately 12.8 seconds.
Why does this matter for users?
The upgrade could have a real impact on crypto payments, applications and platforms built on Solana.
Faster transaction finality could allow merchants and financial applications to accept transfers with significantly less waiting time. This is particularly important for stablecoin payments and services where speed matters.
Of course, 150 milliseconds is currently a target figure. Actual performance will only be measurable after Alpenglow is activated on the mainnet.
How could Alpenglow affect the price of SOL?
A technological improvement of this scale could increase interest in Solana and its native crypto-asset, SOL, particularly if faster transactions attract more users, developers and financial applications. In the long term, broader adoption of the network could support demand for SOL and potentially its price.
In the short term, however, the market may have already priced in expectations surrounding Alpenglow, while price movements will also depend on overall crypto market conditions. Therefore, a successful upgrade does not necessarily mean an immediate price increase.
Another step towards faster digital payments
Solana's development demonstrates how blockchain infrastructure is gradually approaching the speed users expect from modern financial applications.
If Alpenglow achieves its intended performance, it will represent a significant technological milestone for the network and the applications built on it.
